What is Agaricus blazei mushroom extract?
Agaricus blazei mushroom extract is one of the more popular health foods in Japan due to its health benefits. According to a nationwide survey sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Labor in Japan (a research based on 3094 interviews at 127 medical facilities, 2011), 59.5% of consumers of health foods staying at hospices were using Agaricus blazei mushroom products. There are mainly two formulations for the delivery of Agaricus blazei mushroom extract products: powder and liquid
Supplements and pharmaceutical manufacturers use fruitbody or mycelium, and sometimes both to produce Agaricus blazei mushroom extract. Fruitbody is the part of the mushroom that is above ground. Mycelium is the underground part of the mushroom. Nutritional profiles of fruitbody and mycelium are slightly different.
Choosing the right extraction method
There are many different ways to extract herbs, botanicals, and mushrooms. In our experiments, we found that you can optimize the quantity and variety of nutrients that can be extracted. The alcohol extraction method is used to obtain more water insoluble nutrients while the water extraction method is chosen to obtain water soluble nutrients. Therefore, supplement formulators need to determine the targeted nutrients before selecting an extraction method. Even though the starting raw material is the same, the benefits of the extract product can differ based on the varying extracted nutrients.
After researchers from the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hills and Department of Biochemistry, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine studied for over 3 years the health promoting activities of our Agaricus blazei mushroom extract processed by various extraction methods, Atlas World USA, Inc. decided to launch both encapsulated milled powder and water liquid extract in the US market. We also used a patented liquid extraction technology to create our professional grade Agaricus blazei mushroom extract formula, Agaricus Ekismate®.
Liquid or Powder
Fresh Agaricus blazei mushroom has a sweet almond flavor, and American consumers may not be accustomed to the taste of a liquid extract of the Agaricus blazei mushroom extract prepared by water or alcohol extraction. When diluted with water, the liquid extract tastes like an earthy tea although, the mushroom contains an Umami flavor. You can also add liquid extract of Agaricus blazei such as Agaricus Bio® Super Liquid to soup and sauce for a more savory flavor when foods are ready to be served. You can also add the liquid extract and powder to your morning smoothie. If you’re not a big fan of an earthy tea flavor, encapsulated powder is the way to go. Agaricus Bio® 600mg uses vegetarian capsules that make the product flavorless.
Quality of mushroom
Mushroom absorbs not only nutrients from the ground but also other things. Clean and nutritious growing medium or compost is essential for growing quality mushrooms without contaminants such as heavy metals. At our organic mushroom farm, we tested various types of growing mediums. We are growing our organic Agaricus blazei mushroom on a special growing medium to limit heavy metal contents. While wild grown mushrooms sound exquisite, it is challenging to produce a large quantity of pure Agaricus blazei mushrooms with consistent quality and potency in the wildness. Therefore, our mushrooms are grown in a controlled environment to meet strict product specifications set by pharmaceutical and cosmetic clients in Japan.
